While 334 boats spent last week chasing $9.9 million offshore, a second competition was running on the docks at Sunset Marina. No fish involved. No polygraph. Just a bar tab.

Welcome to the Teaser’s Cup.

How it works

The rules are printed on a screen above the bar and they are exactly as simple as they sound.

The contest runs the length of the White Marlin Open at Teasers, the bar at Sunset Grille on the Sunset Marina docks in West Ocean City. Any boat fishing the Open can enter. You tell your server, your bartender or the retail associate to put your tab in the contest, you make sure your boat name is on it, and everything counts — food, beverage, merchandise.

Standings are posted daily. Highest accumulated tab at the end of the week wins.

That is it. That is the whole tournament.

The hardware is not a joke

You would think a bar tab contest would end with a handshake and a hangover. Not here.

Past Teaser’s Cup winners have taken home trophies and WWE-style championship belts — the full oversized gold-plate kind you see on wrestlers. In 2024 the prize was upgraded to a Super Bowl–style championship ring.

Boats that just spent a week fishing for three and a half million dollars want that ring. That tells you everything about the culture on these docks.

What a winning tab actually looks like

In 2023 the winning tab came in around $40,000.

For one week. At one bar.

Understand what is being bought. Teasers keeps 15-litre bottles of Veuve Clicquot behind the bar at roughly $3,000 apiece — a bottle the size of a small child. They do not always get poured. Some of them get sprayed across the bar by captains and mates the way a winning locker room sprays champagne.

That is the Teaser’s Cup. A crew that raised nine white marlin and released every one of them comes in off the water, and the celebration costs more than most people’s boats.

Why Sunset Marina

Sunset Marina is where a serious chunk of the Open fleet ties up. It is the working end of the tournament — custom Carolina hulls, Vikings, Baylisses, boats that run hard and get run harder. Michael Jordan’s Catch 23 has docked here.

The scales are at Harbour Island. The money gets handed out at the Marlin Club. But the week actually happens at Sunset — crews rigging leaders at dusk, boats coming in at seven with flags up, and a bar on the dock keeping score of something that has nothing to do with fish.

The 2026 result

Standings were posted daily at Teasers all week and the final tab is settled on the docks, not in a press release. We are working on this year’s winner and the number, and we will update this piece as soon as we have it confirmed.

If you were at Sunset last week and you know who took it, tell us. We would rather get it right than get it first.

What is next on these docks

Sunset Marina does not get long to rest. The MidAtlantic runs August 16 through 21 out of two ports simultaneously — Canyon Club Resort Marina in Cape May and Sunset Marina right here in Ocean City — with full weigh-ins at both. Thirty-fifth year. In 2025 it drew 198 boats and a $5.75 million purse.

Same docks. Same bar. We will see whether anybody defends the Cup.
