
Two months into the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season, the basin has produced exactly one named storm.
Tropical Storm Arthur brushed the Texas coast in mid-June and that is the whole list. Meanwhile the Eastern Pacific has been busy enough that the National Hurricane Center has been running advisories over there while the Atlantic map sits empty.
If you have a crossing, a delivery, or a fall passage on the calendar, this is the year to understand what is going on — and, more importantly, what it does not mean.
The forecasts have been walking downward all season
NOAA released its outlook on May 21: a below-normal season, with a 55 percent chance of below-normal activity, 35 percent near-normal, and only 10 percent above-normal. The numbers were 8 to 14 named storms, 3 to 6 of them becoming hurricanes, and 1 to 3 majors.
Colorado State University started higher and has been cutting ever since. Its April 9 forecast called for 13 named storms and two majors. By the July 8 update, CSU was down to nine named storms, four hurricanes, and a single major.
Nine storms would be five fewer than an average season. One major would be two fewer. Put together, 2026 is tracking toward one of the least active Atlantic seasons in more than a decade.
The reason is a thousand miles away
El Niño.
When warm water pools in the eastern Pacific near the equator, it reorganizes the atmosphere across the whole tropical belt. For the Atlantic, the practical effect is wind shear — upper-level winds moving at a different speed or direction than the surface winds. Shear tears the tops off developing storms before they can organize into anything.
It also drags sinking, dry air over the Caribbean, and tropical systems cannot build in dry air.
Both mechanisms are running hard this year. Wind shear over the Caribbean was the second highest on record for early July, according to WPLG-TV hurricane specialist Michael Lowry. Model guidance through the heart of the season shows the same signal across the main development region — the stretch from the coast of Africa to the Yucatán where most of the big Atlantic hurricanes are born.
Storms have to get through that corridor. This year the corridor is hostile.
Now the part every Captain needs to hear
A quiet season is not a safe season.
CSU says it plainly every year and it is worth repeating: it only takes one hurricane making landfall to make it an active season for you. The forecast counts storms across an entire ocean basin. It says nothing about whether one of them finds your harbor.
Some of the most destructive hurricanes in American history came out of seasons that produced very few storms. The Atlantic does not care about the average. You are not exposed to a season, you are exposed to one storm.
The season runs through November 30, and the peak — mid-August through mid-October — has not started yet. Everything above describes a basin that has not reached its busiest six weeks.
What this actually changes about your planning
What it does change. Insurance-driven schedules and named-storm plans stay exactly where they are. But a quiet basin means weather windows are likely to be longer and more reliable this fall than they have been in several years. If you have been putting off a Bahamas crossing or a run down the coast because the last few Septembers were a mess, this is a better-than-usual year to go.
What it does not change. Ground tackle. Haul-out plans. A named-storm plan you have actually rehearsed rather than one that lives in your head. Insurance conditions on where the boat can be and when. Watching the tropics daily from August onward, forecast or no forecast.
The Captains who get hurt in quiet seasons are the ones who let the seasonal outlook talk them out of a plan they already had.
How to actually watch it
Go to the source. The National Hurricane Center publishes the Atlantic two-day and seven-day tropical outlooks and updates them around the clock. That is the only feed that matters. Everything else is somebody’s interpretation of it, usually with a headline attached.
Learn to read a cone properly while nothing is happening — the cone is where the center might go, not where the weather is, and boats get caught every year by people who did not understand that difference until it mattered.
And build your weather window off consecutive model runs agreeing, not off one favorable forecast you liked the look of.
