For anyone who hasn’t stood shoulder-to-shoulder at the Harbour Island scales on an August night, here’s the short version. Since 1974, the Open has grown from 57 boats fishing for a $20,000 purse into a full-blown sportfishing spectacle that has paid out well over $121 million to anglers chasing the white marlin, blue marlin, tuna, wahoo, and dolphin that ride the Gulf Stream north each summer. The 2025 event drew 282 boats and more than 3,000 contestants, and awarded over $7.24 million — including a single top individual payout of $3.9 million. That is not a typo. One fish, life-changing money.
What’s New for 2026: A Six-Day Format
Here’s the headline every Captain is talking about. For the first time in tournament history, the 2026 White Marlin Open moves to a six-day format. Anglers still fish three of the six days, but organizers have added Saturday to the back end of the week, running Monday, August 3 through Saturday, August 8.
The reason is pure offshore practicality: weather. Under the old three-out-of-five setup, a stretch of nasty conditions could squeeze a crew’s fishing days into a corner. Stretching the window to six days gives Captains more room to pick their shots, run when the ocean lets them, and put lines in the water on the days that actually fish. More flexibility, more certainty, and — with the Gulf Stream doing what it does in early August — more chances at a game-changer.
The Scene at the Scales
The fish come to the Harbour Island Marina at 14th Street and the Bay, where weigh-ins run each day of the tournament and the crowds pack in to watch. It is free, it is open to the public, and it is one of the best shows in saltwater. Down at the inlet, Marlin Fest brings live music, food, vendors, and a big-screen livestream of the weigh-ins for the folks who want the whole party without the boat ride.
Registration weekend lands the days before, with late registration at Harbour Island on August 1 and 2. If you’re planning to be in town, plan early — Ocean City fills up fast during Open week, and every dock rat within a hundred miles knows it.
